Hats Off to the BMW 2002 Hommage

“Exactly 50 years ago, the 02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupe is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today. The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. BMW is paying tribute to the historic icon, which redefined and reshaped the history of sports and racing cars at the time. Now BMW has built a tribute to honour the legend from 1973, the 2002 Turbo, at Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

“The eye-catching design of the BMW 2002 Hommage employs a very dynamic, striking use of forms for its own take on what is, for me, one of the most iconic vehicles in BMW history. At the same time, it encapsulates BMW’s major motorsport triumphs, which were made possible by turbo technology. As such, the Hommage car brings together the past and future of BMW in a confident statement of unadulterated driving joy,” says Karim Habib, Head of Design, BMW Automobiles.

The design is bolder than ever, with a combination of historical revival and a sleek modern masterpiece. And no wonder; the 2002 Hommage is based on the 2 Series model, but on steroids...

From the first glance, you'll realize that it is very determined and willing to tear up the asphalt, with a low profile and a sharp fascia, just like a shark nose. Definitely promising a thrilling driving experience.

The aerodynamic proportions are extremely effective, with large spoilers at both ends of the body, and the profusion of air intakes does manage the airflow and maximize downforce in every way possible.

A fusion of the future and the golden past, full of achievements and trophies; BMW intends to continue this tradition by installing historic features from the 2002 Turbo in the new 2002 Hommage to revive the legend. All I'm going to say is that my hat is off to BMW and to the 2002 Hommage out of respect. Man, they did it right...
